Abstract and Organic Shapes

I am totally loving organic shapes...and I’m thinking (and hoping) that they’re here to stay for a while.  By no means is this a new concept. We can look to history to see many times that design was very nature-inspired and organic, however I think there is a real need for natural and softer shapes in a very tech-centred and busy world. We also seem to be in a place right now where there is an increasing appreciation for handcrafted, artisan, one-of a-kind type pieces.  I love how uniqueness is so celebrated these days - in society, fashion, interiors - and this is now extending to the shapes that are being used in all aspects of design as well.

Organic shapes can be completely abstract but interestingly enough, you often see the shapes inspired by nature - cells, crystals, bones, maps.  Smooth and flowing lines can feel warmer, softer and often feminine.

The artwork I have created at BLANCCARTE Interiors is all about abstract shapes - there are no hard lines; just soft and curved.  The organic nature of the artwork is also enhanced by use of materials - watercolor is applied in a very spontaneous way, with the results being largely unplanned.  One of the most exciting parts about the large scale artwork, is that even though I am using silk screens to produce quantity of each piece (something I think is so cool), the artwork retains its unique and artisanal quality because every piece is hand painted on top of the ink. No two pieces are alike.  I find that organic shapes often compliment hard and clean lines very beautifully, and we are applying that feel to our artwork through choice of medium as well as shape.
