Mixed Elements

Mixed materials is a design trend that has been in style for some time now, but I feel like maybe we should stop talking about mixed materials and just talk about mixed everything - mixed textures, materials, eras, styles! I have to say, this is one of my favourite things about design right now - the ability to like many things without having to choose a particular one is so much fun, and it makes good sense for so many reasons.  I have trouble sticking to a certain look (with everything) because there is so much out there that I love! Even if I try to stick to one thing, it always just evolves into something else as I go along. There are just too many amazing things that have happened in past and are happening currently in the world of design to limit yourself to one thing. The freedom to like what you like and bring it all together in your own way is a liberating way to design but it is also an amazing way to bring depth and interest if you like to keep things neutral. This could mean using various textures and textiles in a fashion collection or it could mean mixing modern, nordic and vintage all in the same interior.  Mixing things up or layering things in is always a good thing in my opinion whether it’s a painting, an interior, fashion, whatever.

You can see mixed elements in the first BLANCCARTE Interiors collection in a few ways.  First, in my throw pillow collection, I really tried to mix fabric textures. There are wools, silks, leathers and linens - so there is that layering of warm and cool, hard and soft going on. The details of the cushions are also very thought out and intricate, however the overall vibe of the collection is intended to be effortless and easy.  Next, in my paintings, I have used a mixture of techniques to create something I feel is special - I have layered silk screening with water colors.

Stay tuned to see how I mix things up with my upcoming designs for sculptural pieces for your coffee table or console!
