Hygge, Blanccarte Style

The Danish term ‘Hygge’ is one we are hearing a lot about these days…but it can be hard to understand exactly what it is, since it doesn’t really have a direct English translation. In a nutshell, the word Hygge means a feeling of coziness and well being. Hygge is about more than just decorating, but we’re going to talk about it with relation to interior design for purposes of this blog.

If you google hygge images, you will see a lot of super cozy socks and fireplaces, or clean and simple Scandinavian white interiors…so unless you have that cozy cottage aesthetic or minimal nordic look you might think that hygge is not for you. However, we think you can have that hygge feeling no matter what your taste in decor. Hygge is all about feeling warm, comfy and content in your surroundings; its a personal thing that can be different for everyone. There are some key design elements which can help you achieve the feeling of hygge, but there really are no rules. We’ve made a gallery of Blanccarte style images that we feel hygge-ish about ;) Hygge to us is using plants to create a wellness vibe, or sculptural pieces that assume their shapes from nature to add an element of well being. We believe colours and textures can make you want to curl up and read a book as much as monkey socks and wood burning in the fireplace. Rich browns and golds, natural woods, sheepskin throws, felts and velvets…cozy right?? Decorating with pieces that are meaningful to you and make you feel comfortable and well - thats hygge! Creating spaces where friends and family can gather and spend time together…thats hygge too! If you are search of the hygge feeling when you are decorating your home, just be mindful of how each piece you choose makes you feel. Be conscious about creating areas that will cause feelings of contentness, whatever that means for you. You’ll know when you’ve got it - look below to get inspired ;)
